and Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr, Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, Yūsuf al-Qāḍī, and Abū Khalīfah al-Jumaḥī.
al-Tirmidhī also transmitted—through an unnamed intermediary—from him.
Al-Bukhārī said: “He makes a mistake here and there, yet he is truthful.” (1)
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad related: “I heard my father say, ‘It seems that the Sufyān from whom Ibrāhīm ibn Bashshar narrates is not Ibn ʿUyaynah’—that is, because what he reports from him is unusual.” (2)
Al-Nasāʾī remarked: “He is not strong.” (3)
Ibn Maʿīn said: “He is nothing.” (4)
Ibn ʿAdī said: “I asked al-Zurayqī in Baṣrah about him, and he replied, ‘By Allah, he was the most ascetic person of his era.’” (5)
Ibn ʿAdī then added: “I do not know of anything in his hadith that I would censure … the hadith.” (6) He also attached a mursal report and said: “In our estimation he is among the truthful.”
Ibn Ḥibbān observed: “He was precise and reliable, and he kept the company of Sufyān for a long time.” (7)
He died in 224 AH; others said in 227 AH.

(6) The autograph copy leaves a blank between the words “alayhi” and “al-hadith”. Ibn ‘Adi’s wording in Al-Kamil, vol. 1, fol. 11, is: “I know of no criticism against him except this hadith cited by al-Bukhari; the rest of his narrations—reported by Ibn ‘Uyaynah, Abu Mu‘awiyah and other reliable transmitters—are sound, and we regard him as truthful.”
The hadith to which al-Bukhari referred is: “Ibrahim al-Ramadi told me: Sufyan related to us, from Burayd, from Abu Burdah, from Abu Musa, from the Prophet ﷺ: kullukum ra‘in wa-kullukum masʾul (each of you is a shepherd and each of you will be held accountable).” Al-Bukhari commented: “This is a mistake; Ibn ‘Uyaynah used to transmit it as mursal.”
