al-ʿAzīz narrated to us; Abu ʿUbayd narrated to us; ʿAbbad ibn ʿAbbad narrated to us; Abu Jamrah (1) informed us, from Ibn ʿAbbas, who said:
The delegation of ʿAbd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah! We are a clan of Rabiʿah, and the unbelievers of Mudar stand between us and you; we can reach you only during a sacred month. Therefore instruct us with something we may practice ourselves and by which we may invite those who are behind us.”
He replied, “I command you with four things and forbid you four. I command you to have faith in Allah—then he explained it to them: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the zakat, and that you pay one-fifth of whatever spoils you take. And I forbid you to use the dubbaʾ, the hantam, the naqīr, and the muqayyar.”
Agreed upon (2).
