ʿAbd al-Ghanī the ḥāfiẓ informed us:
In Abu ʿUbayd’s Book of Purification there are two hadiths that no one besides Abu ʿUbayd ever related, and no one transmitted from him except Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Marwazī.
The first is the report of Shuʿbah, from ʿAmr ibn Abī Wahb.
The second comes through ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from al-Maqburī; it was reported by al-Qaṭṭān from ʿUbayd Allāh (1), while most people narrate it from al-Qaṭṭān through Ibn ʿAjlān.
Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā said, “Abu ʿUbayd narrated to us; Ḥajjāj informed us, from Shuʿbah, from ʿAmr ibn Abī Wahb al-Khuzaʿī, from Mūsā ibn Tharwān, from Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Kurayz, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
‘Whenever the Prophet ﷺ performed wuḍūʾ, he would run his fingers through his beard.’ ” (2)
Ibrāhīm ibn Aḥmad al-Mustamlī said: “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṭarkhān related to us: I heard Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl say, ‘I heard Ḥamdān ibn Sahl say:
I asked Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn about the scribes who wrote from Abu ʿUbayd, and he smiled and replied:
‘Is someone like me to be questioned about Abu ʿUbayd? Rather, Abu ʿUbayd should be asked about the people! I was once with al-Aṣmaʿī when Abu ʿUbayd approached; al-Aṣmaʿī kept his gaze fixed on him until he drew near, then said, “Do you see that man coming?”’ ”
