Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

who said, “I heard Jabir say:
‘I sought permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he asked, “Who is this?”
I replied, “It is I.”
He then said, “It is I, it is I,” as though he disliked the phrase.’

It was recorded by al-Bukhari (1), through Abu al-Walid, from Shuʿbah.

(1) Al-Bukhari, Sahih, Book of Seeking Permission, chapter: “When he is asked, ‘Who is it?’ and he answers, ‘It is I,’” 11/30. The hadith is likewise reported by Muslim, no. 2155; Abu Dawud, no. 5187; al-Tirmidhi, no. 2711; and Ibn Majah, no. 3709, all through several chains from Shuʿbah with the same isnad. Al-Khattabi explains: The reply “It is I” is not an answer in itself and gives no information about what was asked; one should rather say, “I am Jabir,” so that the inquirer learns the name he was asking about.
