Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Maslama—whenever he passed by Ibn Shihāb he would call out, “Shihāb,” and he did so time and again. Mālik became irritated with him. ʿAbd al-Malik would absent himself for a while, then copy onto his tablets whatever he had heard from Mālik, insisting, “I wrote this myself,” and people were amazed at his heedlessness.

He once read to us, in Mālik’s presence, the chapter on Vows. While reciting he said, “I presented to him a portion and a broken youth.” Mālik burst out laughing and corrected him: “A broken cucumber shoot (1), may Allah grant you well-being!”

Ibn Yūnus transmitted this anecdote: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Saʿd told us; ʿAmr ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Sarḥ told us; Ibn Bukayr told us,” and he related the whole story.

He died in Dhu al-Ḥijjah of the year 224 AH. His grandfather was Yazīd, the freedman of Juzaʾ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Marwān.
