Muslim, however, maintains that it occurred during the time of al-Hudaybiyya.
Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim said: ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; he said: Iyās ibn Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ related to me, from his father, who said:
“We arrived in Medina at the time of al-Hudaybiyya with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I went out—together with Rabāḥ, the Prophet’s attendant—riding behind the Messenger of Allah, and I led a horse belonging to Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allah, intending to exercise it alongside the camels. While it was still the dark of pre-dawn, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUyaynah swooped down upon the camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, killed their herdsman, and—along with some companions on horseback—drove the herd away.
I said, ‘Rabāḥ, mount this horse, take it back to Ṭalḥah, and inform the Messenger of Allah of the news.’ I then climbed a hill, faced toward Medina, and shouted three times, ‘Yā ṣabāḥāh!’ (Alarm! A dawn raid!). After that I pursued the raiders with my sword and arrows. I kept shooting at them and hamstringing their mounts—the trees were thick in that area—and whenever a horseman turned back toward me, I would sit at the foot of a tree and shoot; no rider charged at me without my hamstringing his horse.
As I shot I chanted:
I am the son of al-Akwaʿ—

I would overtake one of them, shoot him while he sat on the saddle of his riding camel, and my arrow would lodge in the saddle and pierce his shoulder, whereupon I would say, ‘Take that! I am the son of al-Akwaʿ.’
Whenever the mountain passes narrowed, I climbed the heights and pelted them with stones. That remained my business with them—I pursued them while declaiming my verses—until every single head of the Prophet’s livestock was behind me, rescued from their hands.
I continued shooting at them until they threw away more than 30 spears and more than 30 cloaks to lighten their load. Whatever they discarded I marked with stones, gathering it along the route of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the forenoon had well advanced, ʿUyaynah ibn Badr al-Fazārī came up to reinforce them, while they were
