(1) The nisba al-Bawari comes from the craft of making woven reed mats (*bariya*, pl. *bawari*), the plaited floor-coverings spread out in houses for people to sit on.
(2) In the author’s Mushtabih 1:99 it reads al-Bawari, “one who sells mats”, referring to al-Hasan b. al-Rabiʿ. Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi notes in Tawdih al-mushtabih 1, fol. 82 that he found this in the author’s own hand with the alif placed before the ra, which he considers erroneous. The correct form, he argues, is al-Burāʾi—ba with damma, waw quiescent, ra with fatha, then an alif, a hamza with kasra, and the nisba ya—without an intervening nun, according to Ibn ʿAsakir. Al-Mizzi, in his supplement to Ibn ʿAsakir’s Muʿjam al-nubalāʾ, prefers the spelling with an added nun after the alif, a position already adopted by Ibn Nuqta.
