He died in the year 226 AH. Others said he passed away in 227 AH, in the month of Rajab—may Allah, by His grace, show him mercy.
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī informed us; Abū al-Faḍl ibn Khayrūn informed us; Abū Bakr al-Burqānī informed us; I read this to Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn Ḥamdān, who said: al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Sarrī narrated to you; Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways narrated to us; Sulaimān ibn Bilāl narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim informed me, from al-Qāsim, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“The case of the two who had invoked mutual imprecation (1) was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAdī made a comment about it and then departed. A man from his clan came to him and told him that he had found a man with his wife.
ʿĀṣim said, ‘I have been tried with this only because of what I said.’
He took the matter to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what he had found concerning his wife. The man he had seen was yellow-complexioned, slight of build, and had tightly curled hair.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘O Allah, make it clear!’
The woman then gave birth to a child who resembled the very man her husband claimed to have found with her, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried out the mutual imprecation between them.
A man said to Ibn ʿAbbās in that gathering, ‘Is she the woman about whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If I were to stone anyone without clear evidence, I would have stoned this woman”?’
He replied, ‘No. That was a woman who openly committed wickedness after Islam.’
Muslim (2) recorded this ḥadīth through the narration of Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf from Ismāʿīl.
