It is said that he passed away at the end of Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 219 AH. Mutayyin and others maintained that it was in 220 AH; some added that it occurred in Muḥarram of that same year.⦗1⦘
Al-Bukhārī also transmits a report from a certain “Muḥammad” who is left unnamed in the chain,⦗2⦘ and that anonymous transmitter is Muḥammad al-Dhuhalī.
100 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ, Abū ʿImrān al-Baṣrī* (M, D, S, Q)
He was the Imām, Abū ʿImrān al-Baṣrī—later resident of Mecca—a scholar and ḥadīth specialist, a contemporary of Wakīʿ, ranking alongside al-Ghudānī.
He narrated from: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar; Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah; Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī; Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah; Hishām ibn Ḥassān; Ibn Jurayj; Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq; Yūnus ibn Yazīd; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān, and others.
His chains even descend to Shurayk and Mālik.
Those who transmitted from him include: Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Surayj ibn Yūnus, and Ibn Maʿīn,
(1) Tahdhib al-Kamal, fol. 680.
(2) 6/363: Chapter “What has been reported about the Children of Israel”: the hadith of the leper, the bald man and the blind man. Al-Jiyani remarks that none of the transmitters identifies the narrator, adding that he was probably Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhli. Al-Hafiz states in his Introduction, p. 232: “It is possible that the ‘al-Dhuhli’ appearing in Abu Dharr al-Harawi’s version is Muhammad; it seems likely that this Muhammad is al-Dhuhli. Al-Bukhari did hear from Abd Allah ibn Raja, yet he records this hadith through Muhammad, from Abd Allah ibn Raja.” He then reproduces the isnad as: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhli → Abd Allah ibn Raja. Abu Nuaym offers the same chain in his Mustakhraj, via al-Dhuhli from Abd Allah ibn Raja.
