who is directly under him, even if he has to put up with some annoyance from that person that pains him.⦗1⦘
I have come across his report in the booklet of Ibn Nujayd with an elevated chain.⦗2⦘
ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī said, “The scholars of Basra agreed on the uprightness of two men: Abū ʿUmar al-Ḥawḍī⦗3⦘ and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ.⦗4⦘”
Al-Nasāʾī remarked, “He is unobjectionable.”⦗5⦘
ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī said, “He is truthful, yet he frequently errs and misreads; he is not an authority.”⦗6⦘
I say: al-Bukhārī used him as proof in his Sahih,⦗7⦘ and both al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Mājah also transmitted his narrations.
(1) The chain is weak because Ubayd Allah ibn Ali ibn Urfata is unknown, while the remaining transmitters are trustworthy. The report is found in the Musnad 4/311, Ibn Majah (3657) and al-Mustadrak 4/150. A supporting narration from Muawiya ibn Hayda appears in Ahmad 5/3, 5; Abu Dawud (5139); al-Tirmidhi (1898); and al-Bukhari, al-Adab al-Mufrad (3) with the wording: “I asked, Messenger of Allah, whom should I honour? He replied, ‘Your mother.’ I asked, ‘Whom should I honour?’ He replied, ‘Your mother.’ I asked again, ‘Whom should I honour?’ He replied, ‘Your mother.’ I asked, ‘Whom should I honour?’ He replied, ‘Your father, then the next closest and the next closest.’” Its isnad is hasan; al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan, al-Hakim declared it sahih 4/150, and al-Dhahabi concurred.
Another corroboration comes from Kulayb ibn Manfaʿa, recorded by Abu Dawud (5140) and al-Bukhari, al-Adab al-Mufrad (47), with the wording: “My grandfather asked, Messenger of Allah, whom should I honour? He said, ‘Your mother and your father, your sister and your brother, and the mawla who is next in line; this is an obligatory right and a bond that must be maintained.’” Its isnad is hasan as supporting evidence.
A further narration is transmitted from Abu Rimtha in Ahmad 2/226 and al-Hakim 4/150–151.
(2) A biographical note on him is given above on p. 162 of this volume.
(3) The nisba al-Hawdi refers to al-Hawd, a locality in Basra; see al-Ansab 4/271 and Muʿjam al-Buldan 2/320.

(7) Al-Hafiz states in the Muqaddima, p. 411: “Al-Bukhari met him and transmitted a few hadiths from him, and Muhammad also narrated other hadiths on his authority.”
