Ibn Saʿd and al-Bukhārī said, “He died in 217 AH, in the month of Shawwāl.” (1)
Among his contemporaries was Ḥajjāj ibn Muḥammad ar-Raqqī, already mentioned above. (2)
Another is Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr al-Faṣāṭīṭī (3), who also narrates from Qurra ibn Khālid; he is weak.
There is likewise Ḥajjāj ibn Abī Manīʿ ar-Ruṣāfī (4): he transmits, from his grandfather ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Ziyād, a collection from az-Zuhrī. He is trustworthy (ṣadūq). Both adh-Dhuhlī, Ibn Wārah, and al-Fasawī met him.

(2) The person mentioned in volume nine is Hajjaj b. Muhammad al-Misisi, nicknamed al-Aʿwar. He was originally from Tirmidh, lived for a time in Baghdad and later moved to al-Misis. No biographical source, to our knowledge, links him to al-Raqqa, and within this generation we have found no narrator bearing that name who is described as al-Raqi.
(3) The nisba al-Fusati refers to al-fusatit, dwellings made of woven hair, as stated in al-Ansab and al-Lubab. The reading al-Fustati found in both the manuscript and the printed edition of al-Bukhari’s al-Tarikh al-Kabir (2/380) is incorrect. (4) The nisba al-Rassafi points to Rassafat al-Sham, as al-Samʿani notes in al-Ansab (6/130); al-Bukhari in al-Tarikh al-Kabir simply calls him “a Syrian.” Rassafat al-Sham—also known as the town of Hisham b. ʿAbd al-Malik—lies west of al-Raqqa; the caliph built it when plague struck Syria and used it as a summer residence. (٣) نسبة إلى الفساطيط، وهي البيوت من الشعر كما في " الأنساب " و" اللباب " وفي الأصل والمطبوع من " التاريخ الكبير " للبخاري ٢ / ٣٨٠: " الفسطاطي " وهو خطأ.
