Among those who narrated from him were al-Bukhari, Abu Muhammad al-Darimi, Abu Zurʿah al-Razi, Ismaʿil Sammuwayh, Ibrahim ibn Abi Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, Abu Ishaq al-Jawzajani, Abu ʿAmr ibn Abi Ghrazah al-Ghifari, al-Husayn ibn al-Hakam al-Hibri (1), Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Baghandi, and a great many others.
He was regarded as one of the leading authorities in hadith.
Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Abu Dawud pronounced him reliable.
ʿAbbas al-Duri reported from Yahya ibn Maʿin, who said: “Ismaʿil ibn Aban al-Warraq is trustworthy, whereas Ismaʿil ibn Aban al-Ghanawi is a liar; he fabricated the hadith claiming that ‘the seventh from the descendants of al-ʿAbbas will wear green’—meaning al-Maʾmun.”
It was said that al-Warraq had a slight inclination toward Shiʿism, a trait common among the people of his town.
Abu Jaʿfar al-Mutayyin recorded that al-Warraq died in the year 216 AH.
86 – al-Ghanawi, Ismaʿil ibn Aban
