Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Fadhshāh informed us; he said:
‘Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad informed us; Abū Zurʿah narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us; Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Naṣrī, who said: I heard Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ say:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Among the gravest fabrications are for a man to be attributed to someone other than his (real) father, for him to claim that his eyes saw in a dream what they never saw, and for him to speak about Allah and His Messenger what they never said.’”
Al-Bukhārī also recorded it (1) through the route of ʿAlī.
ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Saʿīd the judge said: “Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Bahrānī narrated to us:
When al-Maʾmūn summoned the people of Ḥimṣ to meet him in Damascus, they selected four men: Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ, Abū al-Yamān, ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh, and Khālid ibn Khalī. Khālid was admitted first and asked, ‘What is your view of Abū al-Yamān?’
He replied, ‘He is our shaykh and our scholar.’
He was then asked, ‘And what do you say about ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh?’
He answered, ‘He is one of the abdāl; whenever a calamity befalls us we consult him, he supplicates Allah, and the calamity is lifted. If he seeks rain for us, we are given rain.’ (2)
