I said, “The man was following the sunnah: he offered salām, smiled, and then wept when he saw the pride and overbearing arrogance that confronted him.”
Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī said, “He died in 219 AH (1).”
Shaykh al-Islām Shams al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad and Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām informed us in writing; they said:
“ʿUmar ibn Ṭabrzad informed us; Hibat Allāh ibn Muḥammad informed us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ghylān informed us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn al-Haytham narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us; Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamzah, from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, said:
‘The last practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was to forego ablution after eating anything that had been touched by fire (2).’”
By this same chain ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh also narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muṭarrif, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The purification of every hide is its tanning.”
This hadith has a clean chain of transmission (3); it is singular, and I have not found it in the Six Books.
Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl and a group, with permission, narrated to us from Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṣaydalanī; Fāṭimah bint ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Ibn Rīdhah narrated to us; and Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Khair informed us, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Zayd; Maḥmūd ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us
