and when Shuʿbah came to Baghdad, he delivered forty gatherings, each one comprising a hundred hadiths, and I attended twenty of them.”
(1) Ibrāhīm ibn al-Haytham al-Baladī said, “Adam lived to be a little over ninety years old. He never dyed his hair; he was far too occupied for that—meaning, with worship. (2)”
Al-Ḥusayn al-Kawkabī stated: “Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Maqdisī related to me:
‘When Adam was at the point of death, he completed the Qur’an while lying covered with his shroud. Then he said:
“By the love I have for You, I beg You—treat this dying moment gently. I had been looking to You for this day; I had placed my hope in You.”
He then said, “There is no god but Allah,” and his soul departed. (3)’
This report was transmitted by Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd from Abū ʿAlī al-Maqdisī.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd said, “Adam died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 220 AH, at the age of eighty-eight. (4)”
The same year is also recorded by Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī (5) and Muṭayyin (6).
Abū Zurʿah al-Naṣrī said, “He died in 221 AH. (7)”
I say: the first date is the sounder one. His companion Bishr ibn Bakr al-Tinnīsī (8) narrated from him, and Bishr had died some time before him.
