Al-Munkadir narrated, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Shurayḥbīl, that a man took a handful of soil from Saʿd’s grave on the day he was buried. When he later opened his hand, the soil had turned into musk.
Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Faṭarī said: Muʿādh ibn Rifāʿah al-Zurqī related to us that Saʿd ibn Muʿādh was buried beside the house of ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah said: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ awoke, and Gabriel—or, he said, an angel—came to him and asked, “Which man of your community died this night, whose death has gladdened the inhabitants of heaven?” He replied, “I know of no one except that Saʿd ibn Muʿādh was near death last evening. What has become of Saʿd?” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, he has passed away, and his people have carried him to their home.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then led the people in the dawn prayer, after which he set out on foot, and the people went out with him on foot as well, until the straps of their sandals snapped from their feet and their cloaks slipped from their shoulders. Someone said, “O Messenger of Allah, you have exhausted the people with this march on foot.” He replied, “I fear the angels may reach him before us, just as they reached Ḥanẓalah before us.”
Shuʿbah said: Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us from Nāfiʿ, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The grave has a constriction; had anyone been spared it, Saʿd ibn Muʿādh would have been spared.”
Shuʿbah also said: Abū Isḥāq related to me from ʿAmr ibn Shurayḥbīl, who said: When Saʿd ibn Muʿādh’s wound burst open, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ embraced him, and the blood flowed onto the Prophet. Abū Bakr came and exclaimed, “Alas—the breaking of our back!” The Prophet replied, “Gently, O Abū Bakr.” Then
