Maḥmūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ narrated from Jābir.
Yūnus, reporting from Ibn Isḥāq, said: Muʿādh ibn Rifāʿah al-Zuraqī told me, “Any one of the men of my tribe whom you choose can inform you that Gabriel came to the Prophet ﷺ in the middle of the night, his head wrapped in a turban of brocade. He said, ‘O Muḥammad, who is this deceased servant for whom the gates of heaven have been opened and at whose death the Throne has trembled?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose at once, his garment trailing behind him, and hurried to Saʿd ibn Muʿādh, only to find that he had already passed away.
Al-Bakkāʾī, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, related: Someone whose reliability I do not doubt told me, quoting al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, that Saʿd was a stout man, yet when the people carried him they found him astonishingly light. Some of the hypocrites remarked, ‘By Allah, he was indeed heavy-set, yet we have never borne a bier lighter than his.’ When this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he said, ‘He has other bearers besides you. By Him in whose hand is my soul, the angels rejoiced at Saʿd’s soul and the Throne shook for him.’
Yūnus also narrated from Ibn Isḥāq: Umayyah ibn ʿAbd Allāh told me that he asked some members of Saʿd’s household, ‘What have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about this?’ They replied, ‘We have been told that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about it and said, “He used to fall short in cleansing himself completely after urinating.”’
Yazīd ibn Hārūn said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: ‘On the Day of the Trench I went out following the people’s tracks, and I heard the reverberation of the ground—that is, the sound of footsteps—behind me. I turned and there was Saʿd ibn Muʿādh, accompanied by his nephew al-Ḥārith ibn Aws, carrying his shield. So I sat down,’
