Ibn Saʿd said: “Abū Mushir was the principal transmitter of Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He was summoned from Damascus to al-Maʾmūn in al-Raqqa, where the caliph asked him about the Qur’an. He replied, ‘It is the speech of Allah,’ and refused to say that it was ‘created.’ Al-Maʾmūn then ordered the execution mat and sword to be brought so that his neck might be struck. When Abū Mushir saw this he said, ‘Created.’ The caliph spared him and said, ‘Had you said that before the sword was drawn I would have accepted it, but now you will go out and say, “I only said it for fear of death.”’ He therefore commanded that Abū Mushir be imprisoned in Baghdad in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year 218 AH. He died a short time later in prison, on the first of Rajab of that same year, and a large number of the people of Baghdad attended his funeral.” (1)
Abū Zurʿah narrated from Abū Mushir: “A child was born to me while al-Awzāʿī was still alive, and I kept the company of Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz for twelve years. None of my peers preserved his hadith better than I did—except that I have forgotten.” (2)
I heard Abū Mushir say, “Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal wrote to me, asking me to forward to him the hadith of Umm Ḥabībah concerning touching the private parts.” (3)
Abū Isḥāq al-Jawzajānī said: “I heard Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn say, ‘The one who…’”
