and he died in the month of Ramaḍān in the year 214 AH, at roughly sixty years of age—may Allah have mercy on him.
ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-Mudhhib related to us, together with a group, saying:
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar informed us; Abu al-Waqt informed us; Abu al-Ḥasan al-Dāwūdī informed us; Abu Muḥammad ibn Ḥammuyah informed us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿUmar informed us; ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥakam narrated to us; Bakr ibn Muḍar related, from Jaʿfar ibn Rabīʿah, from Ṣāliḥ—who is Ibn ʿAṭāʾ—from Jābir:
The Prophet ﷺ said, “I am the leader of the messengers—without boasting—and I am the Seal of the prophets—without boasting—and I am the first to intercede and the first whose intercession will be accepted—without boasting.”
This ḥadīth possesses a sound chain of transmission. As for this Ṣāliḥ, he was an Egyptian, and I know of no fault in him. (1)
58 – Abū al-Mughīrah ʿAbd al-Quddūs ibn al-Ḥajjāj al-Khawlānī* (ʿ)
The Imām, the ḥadīth scholar, the truthful authority, and the principal transmitter of Ḥimṣ, Abū al-Mughīrah ʿAbd al-Quddūs
(1) The remaining transmitters are trustworthy. The report is also found in Sunan al-Darimi 1/27, but there it inserts ‘Ata ibn Rabah between Salih ibn ‘Ata and Jabir.
In the same topic there is a hadith from Abu Hurayrah: “I am the master of the children of Adam on the Day of Resurrection, the first whose grave will be opened, the first intercessor and the first whose intercession will be accepted,” recorded by Ahmad 2/540, Abu Dawud (4763) and Muslim (2278).
Another version from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri states: “I am the master of the children of Adam on the Day of Resurrection—and this is no boast. In my hand will be the Banner of Praise—and this is no boast. No prophet that day, from Adam onward, will remain but that he is under my banner. I am the first intercessor and the first whose intercession will be accepted—and this is no boast,” recorded by Ahmad 3/2, al-Tirmidhi (3618) and Ibn Majah (4308). It is further supported by a narration of ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam in Ibn Hibban (2128).
