50 – ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī (4)
He was the client of the commander and conqueror of Khurasan, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Kurayz al-Qurashī. An imam, a ḥadīth scholar, and deemed trustworthy, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī transmitted traditions from his father; Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī; Salīm, the client of al-Shaʿbī; Hishām ibn Saʿd al-Madanī; Khārijah ibn Muṣʿab; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-ʿUmarī; and others of their generation.
It is said that his family was originally from Nīshāpūr before relocating to Marw.
ʿAlī was learned and a devoted ḥadīth transmitter, much like his father.
Those who narrated from him include Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh, Maḥmūd ibn Ghailān, ʿAlī ibn Khushram, Rajāʾ ibn Murajjā, Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl ibn Khuwaylid (1), Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ, Abū al-Dardāʾ ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Munīb, and others.
He was born in 130 AH.
Al-Nasāʾī said: “There is nothing objectionable about him.”
Abū Ḥātim said: “His ḥadīth is weak.” (2)
Al-Bukhārī stated that he died in 211 AH (3).
