Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Akhfash passed away in a year slightly beyond 210 AH. Another report places his death in 210 AH.

Ibn al-Najjar said, “He was ajlaʿ—that is, a person whose lips do not close over his teeth (1).”

Among his teachers were Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, al-Kalbi, and ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd. He composed several works on grammar, none of which he brought to completion.

Al-Riyashi recounted, “I heard him say, ‘I used to keep company with Sibawayh; at that time he was more knowledgeable than I, but today I surpass him in knowledge’ (2).”
