the Egyptian, known as al-Khawlānī (1), one of the abdal. He was likened to Bishr al-Ḥāfī for his excellence and devotion to God.
He narrated from Ḥaywah ibn Shurayḥ, Rajāʾ ibn Abī ʿAṭāʾ, Bakr ibn Muḍar, and Ḥarmalah al-Kabīr.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū al-Ṭāhir ibn al-Sarraḥ, Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, Saʿīd ibn Asad ibn Mūsā, and Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā.
Yūnus said, “I have not seen among the Sufis anyone more intelligent than he.”
Abū ʿUmar al-Kindī remarked, “He was the foremost man of his time and the one of highest standing.”
Abū Zurʿah said, “Trustworthy, upright, one of the distinguished Muslims.” (2)
I add: al-Ḥākim judged his narrations sound.
He died in 211 AH.
