and then he performed Maghrib. Agreed upon.
Jarir narrated from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father, who said: We were sitting with Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman when a man remarked, “Had I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ I would have fought at his side and proved my valor.” Hudhayfah replied, “Would you really have done so? I remember us with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the Confederates—a night of violent wind and bitter cold—when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Is there anyone who will bring us news of the enemy, so that he may be with me on the Day of Resurrection?’ No one among us answered him. He repeated it a second time, then a third, exactly the same. Then he said, ‘Hudhayfah, get up and bring us news of the enemy.’ Since he had called me by name I had no choice but to rise. He said, ‘Go and bring me news of the enemy, but do not alarm them against me.’ I set off as though I were walking in a bathhouse until I reached them. There I saw Abu Sufyan warming his back at the fire. I fitted an arrow to the string of my bow, intending to shoot him, but then I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘Do not alarm them against me.’ Had I loosed the arrow I would surely have struck him. I therefore returned, still walking as if in a bathhouse, until I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Only then did the cold overtake me, once my task was done and I had settled. I informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what I had seen, and he wrapped me in the edge of a cloak he had been praying in; I slept until dawn. When morning came the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Get up, O sleepyhead.’ Muslim recorded this.
Abu Naʿim said: Yūsuf ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Burdah narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn Abī al-Mukhtār, from Bilāl al-ʿAbasī, from Hudhayfah: On the night of the Confederates the people scattered from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until only twelve men remained with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was crouching from the cold and said, ‘Go to the camp of the Confederates.’ I said, ‘By Him who sent you with the truth, I have only stood up before you—despite the cold—out of shyness toward you.’ He said, ‘Go, son of al-Yaman; you will suffer neither heat nor cold until you return to me.’ So I went to their camp and found Abu Sufyan kindling a fire with a band of men around him who had already begun to disperse.
