Al-Fasawī relates on the authority of Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn:
“Qabīṣah is two months older than Yaḥyā ibn Ādam. I heard Qabīṣah say, ‘I once testified before Sharik; he put me to the test about my testimony. When I told Sufyān about it, he rebuked Sharik, saying, “He had no right to question him.” I even led Sufyān in the prescribed prayer.’” (1)
Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī said, “I asked al-Firyābī, ‘Did you see Qabīṣah with Sufyān?’ He replied, ‘Yes, I saw him while he was still young.’”
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr remarked, “If Qabīṣah had narrated to us from al-Nakhaʿī, we would have accepted it from him.” (2)
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: “Abū Zurʿah was asked about Qabīṣah and Abū Nuʿaym. He replied, ‘Qabīṣah was the better of the two men, while Abū Nuʿaym was the more precise. Among the scholars of hadith I have not seen anyone who memorizes a report and delivers it verbatim, without altering a single word, except Qabīṣah and Abū Nuʿaym in the narrations of al-Thawrī, Yaḥyā al-Himmanī in the narrations of Sharik, and ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd in his own narrations.’” (3)
Abū ʿUbayd al-Ājurrī said, “I asked Abū Dāwūd about Qabīṣah and ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā, and he answered, ‘Qabīṣah’s transmissions are sounder than those of ʿUbayd Allāh. Qabīṣah, Abū ʿĀmir, and Abū Ḥudhayfah did not retain well at first, but later their memory became firm.’” (4)
Isḥāq ibn Sayyār declared, “I have not seen among the senior scholars anyone with a better memory than Qabīṣah.” (5)
