Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the ḥāfiẓ, informed us; Yaḥyā ibn Ḥassān narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Bilāl narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah:
that the Prophet ﷺ said, “No household that has dates will go hungry.” (1)

Through this same chain, from ʿĀʾishah: the Prophet ﷺ said, “Vinegar is an excellent condiment.” (2)

Both reports were recorded by Muslim and al-Tirmidhī on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh, and our transmission reaches them with a higher isnād.

(1) Reported by Muslim, no. 2046 (Book of Drinks, chapter: Bringing dates and similar staples to one’s family) through the chain of transmission of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd al-Rahman. Muslim also recorded it under the same number (ḥadith 153) through ʿAbd Allah b. Maslama b. Qaʿnab, from Yaʿqub b. Muhammad b. Taḥlah, from Abu ʼl-Rijal Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Rahman, from his mother, from ʿAʾishah. It is likewise related by Abu Dawud, no. 3831 (Book of Foods); al-Tirmidhi, no. 1815 (Book of Foods); and Ibn Majah, no. 3327, all of them through two isnads from Sulayman b. Bilal, from Hisham b. ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿAʾishah, with the wording: “A house that has no dates—its people are hungry.” (2) Reported by Muslim, no. 2051 (Book of Drinks, chapter: The virtue of vinegar and using it as a relish) and by al-Tirmidhi, no. 1840 (Book of Foods, chapter: What has been reported concerning vinegar), through the isnad of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd al-Rahman. Ibn Majah records it, no. 3316 (Book of Foods, chapter: Eating with vinegar), through Ahmad b. Abi ʼl-Hawari, from Marwan b. Muḥammad, from Sulayman b. Bilal with the same chain. Muslim also narrates it, no. 2052 (ḥadith 167); Abu Dawud, no. 3821; and al-Nasaʾi, 7/14, all through several routes from al-Muthanna b. Saʿid, who said: Talhah b. Nafiʿ told me that he heard Jabir b. ʿAbd Allah say, “One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took me by the hand to his house. He produced a slice of bread and asked, ‘Do we have any condiment?’ They replied, ‘Nothing except a little vinegar.’ He said, ‘Vinegar is an excellent condiment.’ Since hearing that from the Prophet ﷺ,” Jabir continued, “I have always loved vinegar.” Talhah added, “And I have loved vinegar ever since I heard it from Jabir.” (*) Tarikh Ibn Maʿin, p. 484; Khalifah, Tabaqat (ed. 1332); al-Bukhari, al-Tarikh al-Kabir 7/177; idem, al-Tarikh al-Saghir 2/333; Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa’l-Taʿdil 7/126; al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-Kamal, fol. 1120; al-Dhahabi, Tadhhib al-Tahdhib 3/154/2; idem, al-Kashif 2/396; idem, Tadhkirat al-Huffaz 1/373-375; idem, al-ʿIbar 1/368; Ibn Hajar, Mizaan al-Iʿtidal 3/383; idem, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 8/347; ʿAsqalani, Muqaddimat Fath al-Bari, p. 435; al-Suyuti, Tabaqat al-Huffaz, p. 161; Khalasat Tadhhib al-Kamal, p. 314.
