Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
Abu al-Qāsim ﷺ stated, “Whoever purchases a she-camel whose milk has been held back, then milks her, has a choice between two alternatives: if he so wishes he keeps her, and if he wishes he returns her along with a vessel of food.” (1)

14 – Muẓaffar ibn Mudrik al-Baghdādī * (T, R, S)
The Imām, proven authority, ḥāfiẓ, and meticulous scholar, Abū Kāmil al-Baghdādī, originally of Khurāsānī descent.
Born: sometime before 140 AH, or thereabouts.
He transmitted ḥadith from ʿĀṣim ibn Muḥammad al-ʿUmari, Shaybān the Grammarian, Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Mahdī ibn Maymūn, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mājishūn, Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ, al-Layth ibn Saʿd, Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah, Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah, Shurayk, and their contemporaries.

(1) Its chain of transmission is sound. ‘Awf is the son of Abi Jamila and Muhammad is Ibn Sirin. Ahmad (2/259) records it through ‘Abd al-Wahid from ‘Awf, and al-Tahawi, Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar (4/17), through Bakkar b. Qutaybah from Ruh b. ‘Ubadah from ‘Awf. The same report is transmitted from Abu Hurayrah by Malik (2/683); al-Bukhari (4/309); Muslim (no. 1524); al-Tirmidhi (nos. 1251–1252); Abu Dawud (nos. 3443–3445); al-Nasa’i (7/253-254); Ahmad (2/242, 317); and al-Darimi (2/251). In their wording the expression is “one sa‘ of dates” instead of “a container of food.” Al-laqihah is a she-camel that has recently calved. Al-musarrat is the passive participle of tasriya, the practice of withholding the milk in the udder for several days so that the buyer assumes this is the animal’s normal yield and therefore offers a higher price; the term musarrat applies to a she-camel, cow, or sheep treated in this way. See Fath al-Bari (4/304-305). (*) Biographical sources on the narrator include: Ibn Sa‘d, Tabaqat (7/337); Ibn Ma‘in, Tarikh (no. 571); al-Bukhari, al-Tarikh al-Kabir (8/74) and al-Tarikh al-Saghir (2/278); Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dil (8/442); al-Khatib, Tarikh Baghdad (13/125); al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-Kamal, fol. 1336; al-Dhahabi, Tadhhib al-Tahdhib (4/45/2) and al-Kashif (3/158); al-Dhahabi, Tadhkirat al-Huffaz (1/357-358); Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (11/183); al-Suyuti, Tabaqat al-Huffaz (159); Ibn Hajar, Khulasat Tadhhib al-Kamal (397); Ibn al-‘Imad, Shadharat al-Dhahab (2/18).
