Al-Nasāʾī said, “He is unobjectionable.” (1)
Abū Ḥassān al-Ziyādī stated, “He died in Shawwāl, in the year fifteen (215 AH).” (2)
Ibn Abī Khaythamah said, “He passed away in the year sixteen (216 AH) when he was ninety-two years old. He used to dye his hair with henna. I have been informed that he was born in the year twenty-five (125 AH).” (3)
Ibn Saʿd said: “His mother was al-Zuhrah bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Abī Bakrah. He pursued ḥadith and wrote from Yūnus, Hishām, ʿAwf, and others. His notebooks were later lost, and only the notebook of ʿAwf remained with him, together with a small portion from Ibn ʿAwn, Ibn Jurayj, Ashʿath, and al-Taymī.
“He died in Baghdad on the night of Tuesday, ten days into Shawwāl, in the year two hundred and sixteen (216 AH). His son led the funeral prayer over him. He was a tall, dark-complexioned man who used to dye with henna.” (4)
I say: the correct date of his death is 216 AH. A number of authorities have affirmed this.
His ḥadith are transmitted with a lofty isnād in al-Qaṭīʿiyyāt (5) and elsewhere.
ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad and others wrote to us, saying: “ʿAmr ibn Tabarzad informed us; Aḥmad ibn Ḥasan informed us; Abū Muḥammad al-Jawharī informed us; Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī informed us; Bishr ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Hawdhah ibn Khalīfah narrated to us; ʿAwf narrated to us, from Muḥammad, …”
