endorse a single one of them. Al-Faḍl thereupon gathered the papers, rose, and declared, “Go back empty-handed and disappointed.” (1)

When the Barmakids were struck down, al-Faḍl assumed the vizierate under al-Rashīd, his prestige soared, and the poets extolled him.

9 – Muʾammal ibn Ismāʿīl al-ʿAdawī, their client * (T, S, Q)
The ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAdawī—a Basran, client of the ʿUmarīs—took up residence near Mecca.

He narrated from ʿIkrima ibn ʿAmmār, Shuʿba, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUmar al-Jumaḥī, Ḥammād ibn Salama, and their peers.

Transmitters from him include Aḥmad, Isḥāq, Bundār, Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān, Muʾammal ibn Ihāb, Muḥammad ibn Sahl ibn al-Muhājir, and others.

(1) In al-Wafayat, 4/38, and al-Bidaya, 10/263, the reading is “khasiʾat” (cast down). Those two works also give the remainder of the report: He went out reciting: “Perchance, perchance, time will slacken its reins for shifting states, though the age is austere; Desires will be met, regrets will be healed, and after certain events other events appear.” Yahya heard him chanting those lines and said: “I adjure you, Abu al-Abbas, return!” He returned and signed every petition. Not long after, the Barmakids were ruined at his instigation, and he succeeded them as vizier under al-Rashid. On that episode Abu Nuwas composed: “Time showed no loyalty to the house of Barmak when it shattered their rule with a grievous blow; An age that kept no pact with Yahya could hardly respect the bond of the sons of al-Rabiʿ.” See also al-Faraj baʿd al-shidda, 1/307, 309.
