‘My master would spend most of the night standing in prayer; yet when daybreak came he would sit and tell lies.’” (1)
Ibn Maʿīn and Abū Dāwūd both said: “A liar.” (2)
Al-Bukhārī remarked: “They kept silent about him.” (3)
Al-Nasāʾī and others ruled: “His ḥadīth are to be abandoned.” (4)
I say: He died at Famm al-Ṣulḥ (5) in the year 207 AH, at the age of ninety-three.

(3) al-Bukhārī, al-Taʾrīkh al-Kabīr, 8/218. The expression he uses here designates narrators whose reports are to be abandoned; it is the lowest and most severe level of discrediting in his scale. See al-Sakhāwī, Fatḥ al-Mughīth, p. 161.

Abū Ḥātim said: “He is matrūk al-ḥadīth (his narrations are rejected); his standing is like that of al-Wāqidī.”
Yaʿqūb ibn Shayba remarked: “He was knowledgeable about people’s affairs and their reports, but he was not strong in ḥadīth, nor well-versed in it; some scholars also questioned his truthfulness.” He is listed among the weak narrators by Ibn al-Sakan, Ibn Shāhīn, Ibn al-Jārūd and al-Dāraquṭnī (Lisān al-Mīzān, 6/210).
(5) al-Ṣulah – with a short i followed by a sukūn and a soft ḥāʾ – is a district above Wāsiṭ. A canal branching from the Tigris on its eastern bank is called “Famm al-Ṣulah” (the mouth of al-Ṣulah). The vizier al-Ḥasan ibn Sahl had his residence there, and it was at al-Ṣulah that the caliph al-Maʾmūn consummated his marriage with Burān, daughter of al-Ḥasan ibn Sahl.
