And Ibn ʿAsākir said, “He is a Rāfiḍī, not trustworthy.”
He was criticized for his claim, “I memorized the Qur’an in three days,” and likewise for his remark, “I forgot something no one else has ever forgotten: I grasped my beard, mirror in hand, intending to trim whatever extended beyond the fist, but I forgot and ended up cutting (1) above the fist (2).”
Among his works are: Kitāb al-Jamhara fī al-Nasab (3) (A Compendium of Genealogy), Kitāb Ḥilf al-Fuḍūl, Kitāb al-Munāfarāt, Kitāb al-Kunā, Kitāb Mulūk al-Ṭawāʾif, and Kitāb Mulūk Kindah (4). His writings were numerous—some say they reached one hundred and fifty titles (5).
His father (6) was a Qur’anic exegete, but he too is unreliable and shared the same Rāfiḍī leanings as his son.
(1) That is to say: “I clipped,” with the consonant sad turned into a ya because sad is heavy on the tongue. Al-Lisan explains: qassa al-shaʿr wa-l-suf wa-l-ẓufr yaqussu qassan, and qasastu / qasaytu after the consonantal change. Similar shifts are found in tazannaytu (from tazannantu), taqadda (from taqaddad), dinar (from danar), and labba (from labb). See al-Fakhir by al-Mufaddal ibn Salama, pp. 4–5.

(3) This is the sole source on which specialists in genealogy rely. Only a small fragment of thirteen folios has survived, and, as far as we know, no complete copy has been found. Yaqut al-Hamawi produced an abridgement in 167 folios and noted at its end that he finished it on 20 Dhu al-Hijja 606/1209. We possess a photographic copy taken from a manuscript transcribed from the author’s own exemplar; the scribe states that he completed it in 665/1267. This copy is exceptionally valuable and accurately checked.
(4) He also composed Kitab al-Asnam (The Idols) and Nasab al-Khayl (The Genealogy of Horses), both printed in Cairo under the editorship of Ahmad Zaki.
(5) Ibn al-Nadim lists these works in al-Fihrist, pp. 108–111, bringing the total to 144 titles.
(6) His biography appeared in volume 6 of the present work, p. 248. Ibn Kathir states in Ikhtisar ʿUlum al-Hadith, p. 209, in the forty-eighth section on individuals with multiple names: “Among them is Muhammad ibn al-Saʾib al-Kalbi: some transmit him under this name, others call him Hammad ibn al-Saʾib; some use the kunya Abu al-Nadr, and others Abu Saʿid.” Ibn al-Salah adds that this is the transmitter from whom ʿAtiyya al-ʿAwfi relates his tafsir, suggesting—wrongly—that he is Abu Saʿid al-Khudri.
