Al-Furawī (1) reported to us: Abu al-Maʿālī al-Fārisī reported to us; Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqī reported to us; Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās al-ʿUṣmī (2) narrated to us; Abu Isḥāq ibn Yāsīn al-Harawī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Isḥāq al-Anṣārī narrated to us; I heard al-Marwadhī say:
Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “Whenever I am asked about a point of law for which I know no transmitted report, I give the ruling of al-Shāfiʿī on the matter. He is an Imām from Quraysh, and it has been related from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: ‘A scholar of Quraysh will fill the earth with knowledge.’” Ahmad added, “I have been praying for al-Shāfiʿī in my ṣalāh for forty years.” (3)
Abu Dāwud al-Ṭayālisī and Isḥāq ibn Isrāʾīl narrated; Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from Abu al-Jārūd al-Naḍr ibn Ḥumayd (4), from Abu al-Jārūd, from Abu al-Aḥwaṣ, from ʿAbd Allāh:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not revile Quraysh, for its scholar will fill the earth with knowledge.” (5)
I say: Concerning al-Naḍr, Abu Ḥātim said, “His hadith is abandoned.” (6)
(1) With the fa pronounced with a dumma, the nisba refers to Farawa, a small locality on the outskirts of Khwarazm.
(2) The nisba goes back to ‘Asam, the forefather of Muhammad b. al-‘Abbas mentioned here.
(3) Al-Bayhaqi, Manaqib, 1:54; Ibn Hajar, Tuwali al-Ta’sis, 48; Abu Nu‘aym, Hilyat al-Awliya, 9:65; al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, Tarikh Baghdad, 2:60–61; Fakhr al-Razi, Manaqib, 126.
(4) The printed Musnad of al-Tayalisi and the Hilya read “al-Nadr b. Ma‘bad,” while Tarikh Baghdad reads “al-Nadr b. Sa‘id”; both forms are corrupt.
(5) The report appears in Musnad al-Tayalisi, 2:199; Hilyat al-Awliya, 9:65; Tarikh Baghdad, 2:60–61; and al-Bayhaqi, Manaqib, 1:26, with the chain: from al-Nadr b. Humayd, from al-Jarud, from Abu al-Ahwas—although, as will be shown below, al-Bukhari says that he narrated from Abu al-Jarud.
(6) See Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dil, 8:476–77; the author also cites him in al-Mizan, 4:256: “al-Nadr b. Humayd Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ishaq.” Abu Hatim declares him “abandoned in hadith,” and al-Bukhari calls him “rejectable (munkar al-hadith).” He is al-Nadr b. Humayd al-Kindi; al-Bukhari adds that he transmitted from Abu al-Jarud and Thabit, and then cites the report through the isnad of Ja‘far b. Sulayman. Al-Sakhawi records it in al-Maqasid al-Hasana, p. 281, noting: “Al-Jarud is unknown, and the reliability of his transmitters is disputed.”
