Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

in my book anything that clashes with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and disregard what I have written. (1)

We once heard a small collection said to describe al-Shāfiʿī’s journey, yet I have cited none of it, for anyone who examines it will see that it is groundless. (2) In like manner, statements and legal principles have been attributed to him that are not soundly established. The report Ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam transmits from him regarding maḥāsh al-nisāʾ (3) is objectionable, and the texts in al-Shāfiʿī’s own writings contradict it.

May Allah pardon Imam al-Bayhaqi: he quoted this account of al-Shafi‘i’s journey from al-Balawi in Manaqib al-Shafi‘i, 1/130 ff., without warning the reader of its falsity, even though its spurious nature is obvious. Because of this, several later authors who lacked expertise in scrutinising reports—such as al-Juwayni, Fakhr al-Razi and Abu Hamid al-Tusi—were misled and relied on it when arguing for the superiority of al-Shafi‘i’s school. It is likewise astonishing that the fabrication passed muster with Imam al-Nawawi, himself a first-rate hadith critic. In al-Majmu‘, 1/81, he says: “There is a well-known, widely transmitted treatise on his journey,” and in Tahdhib al-Asma, 1/59, he cites from it: “When al-Shafi‘i left the presence of Harun al-Rashid, the judge Abu Yusuf sent him greetings, saying: ‘Write books, for you are the most qualified person to compose in our time.’” Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar writes in Tawali al-Ta’sis, p. 71: “The journey attributed to al-Shafi‘i, transmitted through Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Balawi, was produced by al-Abari, al-Bayhaqi and others in both long and abridged versions. Fakhr al-Razi reproduced it without chain in Manaqib al-Shafi‘i, p. 23, and relied on it. It is a forgery: most of it is fabricated, and parts are a patchwork of dubious reports. The clearest lie is the claim that Abu Yusuf and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan urged Harun al-Rashid to kill al-Shafi‘i. This is false for two reasons: (i) when al-Shafi‘i first entered Baghdad, Abu Yusuf had already died and never met him; (ii) both men were too God-fearing to plot the death of a Muslim scholar, especially one famed for knowledge. Their rank, prestige and known piety preclude such behaviour. Sound chains establish that al-Shafi‘i’s first arrival in Baghdad was in 184 AH; Abu Yusuf had died two years earlier, and on that visit al-Shafi‘i met Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, whom he already knew in the Hijaz and whose lessons he had attended.” (3) al-Mahash (pl. of mahsha) refers to the backside. Ibn Abd al-Hakam’s version of the report is cited by Ibn Abi—
