and you strike off their heads? Then we would stand with you against the rest of them until they were utterly destroyed.’ He (Nuʿaym) added, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has already answered them, “Yes.” Therefore, should the Jews send to you asking for a pledge—men from among your leaders as hostages—do not agree to it.’
Nuʿaym then went out to Ghaṭafān and said, ‘People of Ghaṭafān, you are my stock and my clan, the dearest of people to me, and I do not think that you suspect me.’ They replied, ‘You are truthful; we harbor no suspicion toward you.’ He said, ‘Then keep what I tell you confidential.’ They said, ‘We will.’ He repeated to them exactly what he had told Quraysh and warned them in the same way.
On the Saturday night of Shawwāl—and this was part of Allah’s plan for His Messenger—Abū Sufyān and the chiefs of Ghaṭafān sent ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl with a party of men from Quraysh and Ghaṭafān to Banū Qurayẓah. They said, ‘We can no longer remain here; our camels and horses are exhausted. March out at dawn so that we may bring the fight to Muhammad.’
Banū Qurayẓah sent back word: ‘Today is Saturday, a day on which we do nothing. Some of us once violated it and suffered a punishment you know well. Nor will we fight Muhammad alongside you unless you give us hostages from among your men to keep in our hands as a guarantee until we engage him. We fear that if the battle turns fierce you will withdraw to your lands, leaving us alone with the man who dwells among us, and we have no strength for that.’
When the envoys returned with this reply, Quraysh and Ghaṭafān said, ‘By Allah, Nuʿaym ibn Masʿūd has told you the truth.’ They then sent to Banū Qurayẓah: ‘By Allah, we will not hand over a single man of ours; if you want battle, come out and fight.’
When this message reached them, Banū Qurayẓah said, ‘What Nuʿaym told you is indeed the truth. These people only want to fight: if they see an opening, they will seize it, but if not they will hasten back to their homes.’ They therefore sent to Quraysh and Ghaṭafān: ‘By Allah, we will not fight alongside you until you give us hostages.’ They refused, and Allah sowed discord among them.
