Al-Fārisi reported: I heard al-Muzani say, “I heard al-Shāfiʿī say:
‘Any household whose women mix with men outside their family and whose men mix with women outside their family will inevitably find foolishness in their children.’ ⦗1⦘

Zakariyyā ibn Aḥmad al-Balkhī, the judge, said: I heard Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Naṣr al-Tirmidhī say:
‘I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, in his mosque at Medina. It was as though I came, offered him the greeting of peace, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, shall I record the opinion of Mālik?” He said, “No.” I asked, “Shall I record the opinion of Abū Ḥanīfa?” He said, “No.” I then asked, “Shall I record the opinion of al-Shāfiʿī?” He motioned with his hand as though reprimanding me and said, “You say, ‘the opinion of al-Shāfiʿī’! It is not an opinion; rather, it is a refutation of those who oppose my sunnah.”’
More than one narrator has related this report from Abū Jaʿfar. ⦗2⦘

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim said: Abū ʿUthmān al-Khuwarizmī, who resides in Mecca— in what he wrote to me—narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Rashīq narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan al-Balkhī narrated to us, saying:
‘I said in a dream, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the statements of Abū Ḥanīfa, al-Shāfiʿī, and Mālik?” He replied, “There is no statement but mine; however, the statement of al-Shāfiʿī is the very opposite of the statements of the people of innovation.”’ ⦗3⦘

It has also been transmitted through two separate chains from Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Tirmidhī, the ḥāfiẓ, who said:

Since when has a dream been considered admissible evidence among scholars? Malik, Abu Hanifa, and other reliable leading imams exercised ijtihad (independent reasoning): each was correct in many of his conclusions and mistaken in some. Thus every one of them has statements that are accepted and others that are set aside—so what of it? (3) Hilyat al-Awliya, 9:100–101.
