I also heard him say, “Allah has excused what is in the hearts, but He has charged people with their deeds and their words.” (1)
Al-Muzanī relates that al-Shāfiʿī said, “The one who has abandoned the prayer and will not perform it is told: ‘Pray; if you do, all is well. If you refuse, we shall order you to repent; should you repent, you are spared, but if not, we will kill you. It is like disbelief: we say, “Believe, otherwise we shall kill you.”’
Al-Shāfiʿī also said, “Whoever stubbornly disputes with me over the truth and resists it falls from my regard, whereas anyone who accepts it commands my reverence and wins my affection.” (2)
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “I heard my father say: Al-Shāfiʿī declared, ‘You are better versed in authentic reports than we are. Whenever a sound report reaches you, inform me of it so that I may adopt it—whether it be Kūfan, Basran, or Syrian.’” (3)
Harmalah reported that al-Shāfiʿī said, “Everything I have stated which is authentically contradicted by a saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is more deserving of being followed; so do not imitate me blindly.” (4)
