Zakariyyā al-Sājī said: “I heard Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl relate that he had heard Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Karābīsī say:
‘I was present with al-Shāfiʿī when Bishr al-Marrīsī came in. Al-Shāfiʿī said to him, “Tell me about the doctrine you are promoting: do you have for it an explicit text from the Book, a prescribed obligation, an established Sunnah, and have you found the early generations researching it or asking about it?”
Bishr replied, “No, except that we are not allowed to differ from it.”
Al-Shāfiʿī said, “You have just admitted your own mistake. Why do you not engage in kalām on questions of jurisprudence and the transmitted reports—subjects for which people would align themselves with you—yet you leave that aside for this?”
He answered, “We have a passion for it.”
When Bishr left, al-Shāfiʿī remarked, “He will never prosper.” (1)
Abū Thawr and al-Rabīʿ both heard al-Shāfiʿī say, “No one has ever donned the mantle of kalām and then succeeded.” (2)

Other Companions also transmitted this report, and the hadith is mutawatir (mass-transmitted).
(1) Al-Bayhaqi, Manaqib, 1/204. Bishr here sided with the Muʿtazila on the issue of the Quran’s createdness, which prompted the judge Abu Yusuf to rebuke him—without effect. Al-Baghdadi writes in Usul al-Din, p. 308: “Al-Mirisi, one of Abu Hanifa’s associates, agreed with the Muʿtazila on the Quran’s createdness but went further than they did in asserting that human actions are created.” Ibn Taymiyya states in Minhaj al-Sunnah, 1/256: “He belonged to the Murjiʾa, not the Muʿtazila; indeed, he was among the leading Jahmites.” Ibn Zanjuyah transmits from Ahmad ibn Hanbal: “I was present in Abu Yusuf’s session when he ordered Bishr al-Mirisi to be dragged out by his feet. Later I saw him again in the same gathering and asked, ‘After what happened to you yesterday, why did you return?’ He replied, ‘I will not forfeit my share of knowledge because of what was done to me yesterday.’” Ibn Abi al-ʿAwam, via al-Tahawi, reports that Abu Yusuf used to say to Bishr al-Mirisi, “What an excellent man you would be were it not for your unsound views.” Al-Saymari, p. 156, notes: “He authored many works and transmitted extensively from Abu Yusuf. Though known for piety and asceticism, people avoided him in that period because of his fame in speculative theology. Husayn al-Najjar took his doctrine from him.” A full biography of Bishr al-Mirisi appears later in this volume, p. 199.
