grasped the meaning and the intended sense, except for two words—one of them is dassāhā (1).
Its chain of transmission is unknown.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam said: I heard al-Shāfiʿī say, “I recited the Qur’an to Ismāʿīl ibn Qusṭanṭīn.
He also said, “I recited to Shibl, and Shibl told me that he had recited to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kathīr, who had recited to Mujāhid, and Mujāhid reported that he had recited to Ibn ʿAbbās.”
Al-Shāfiʿī added: “Ismāʿīl used to say: ‘Qur’an is a proper noun without a hamzah, and it is not derived from qaraʾtu (“I recited”). If it were taken from qaraʾtu, then everything that is recited would be called Qur’an. Rather, it is a specific name for this Scripture, like the Torah and the Gospel.’” (2)

Hilyat al-Awliya, 9/104, cites Ibn Bint al-Shafi‘i: “I heard my father say, ‘I heard al-Shafi‘i say: I examined the two covers of the mushaf and grasped God’s intent in everything except for two expressions; one of them is His statement wa-qad khaba man dassaha (Sura 91:10) – I could not locate its sense.’” Al-Bayhaqi also transmits it in Ahkam al-Qurʾan, 2/190, through Muhammad b. ʿAbd Allah b. Muhammad: “I heard al-Shafi‘i say: ‘I looked between the two covers of the mushaf and understood the will of God – exalted be He – in all of it except two words (he named them, and I forgot one); the other is wa-qad khaba man dassaha; I did not find this expression in the speech of the Arabs. I later read in Muqatil b. Sulayman that it is the idiom of the Sudan* and that dassaha means “led it astray.”’” Al-Bayhaqi comments: By “in the speech of the Arabs” al-Shafi‘i meant either their dialects in general or only the varieties known to him; what Muqatil labels “the idiom of the Sudan” still belongs to Arabic.
Ibn Qutayba, Mushkil al-Qurʾan, p. 267: “wa-qad khaba man dassaha” means ‘he diminished it and concealed it by abandoning righteous deeds and committing sins; the wicked person is always obscure, of low standing, insignificant, downcast.’ Dassaha derives from dassastu, with one of the two s-sounds changed to y, just as one says labbaytu for the original labbabtu, or qassaytu azfari for qassastu, and the like.
(2) Chain of transmission: sound (hasan). Ismaʿil b. Qustantin – full name Ismaʿil b. ʿAbd Allah b. Qustantin, Abu Ishaq al-Makki, client of Banu Makhzum, known as al-Qust, Qurʾan-reader of Mecca, d. 170/786. Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil, 2/180, records no criticism or endorsement of him; Ibn al-Jazari, Tabaqat, 1/166, calls him “reliable and precise.” The remaining transmitters belong to the sound collections.
