I read this report to Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muʾayyad al-Qarāfī in Egypt, and he transmitted it to us; likewise Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Fatḥ and al-Faraj ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Kātib in Baghdad both related it to us. They said:
Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar the judge informed us; Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Naqqūr informed us; ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar al-Ḥarbī—in the year 385 AH—narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Ṣūfī narrated to us; Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn— in 227 AH—narrated to us; Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān al-Nawfalī, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Love Allah for the blessings with which He nourishes you; love me for the love of Allah; and love my Household for my love.”
This is a singular, isolated hadith: no one transmitted it from Ibn ʿAbbās except his son ʿAlī, and no one transmitted it from ʿAlī except his son Muḥammad—Abū al-Khulafāʾ.
It was uniquely passed on from him by the judge of Ṣanʿāʾ, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān, and only Hishām related it from him.
Al-Tirmidhī recorded it (1) through Sulaymān ibn al-Ashʿath al-Sijzī, from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, so we have obtained it with an isnād two levels higher.
Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī likewise cited it in his History (2) through Ziyād ibn Ayyūb, from Ibn Maʿīn. In this matter everyone depends upon Yaḥyā, and al-Nawfalī is unknown.
