by refusing to speak about it, even though he is superior to me (1).
With this same chain, up to ʿAbd al-Razzaq, Maʿmar informed us, saying:
“ʿAdī ibn Arṭāʾah used to send al-Ḥasan every day a large wooden bowl (2) of tharīd, and he and his companions would eat from it.”
I say: ʿAdī had been the governor of Basra on behalf of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
With this same chain, up to ʿAbd al-Razzaq, al-Thawrī informed us, saying: “Manṣūr related to me from Mujāhid, from ʿAqqār ibn al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, from his father:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Whoever undergoes cauterisation or seeks ruqyah has disowned reliance on Allah (3).”’”
Again, with this chain up to ʿAbd al-Razzaq, Maʿmar related from al-Zuhrī who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ entered upon one of his family members and asked, ‘Where is so-and-so?’
They replied, ‘Her eye is hurting.’
He said, ‘Seek ruqyah for her, for her eyes have pleased me (4).’”
I read this before Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq; al-Fatḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Salām reported to you from him; Hibat-Allah ibn Abī Sharīk related to us; Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Naqqūr narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī dictated it and said:
“It was read before Abū ʿUmar Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf…”
