al-Rāzī, from Yūnus, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Prophet ﷺ declared: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they say, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ establish the prayer, and give the zakah. Once they do that, their lives and property are protected from me—except when the law permits otherwise—and their account is with Allah.”
Al-Ḥasan’s direct hearing from Abū Hurayrah is not soundly established, and he was known for tadlīs (1).
214 – Makkī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Bashīr ibn Farqad al-Tamīmī (ʿ)
It is also said that his grandfather was Farqad ibn Bashīr. He was the Imām, ḥāfiẓ, truthful, and the leading musnid of Khurasan, Abū al-Sakan al-Tamīmī, al-Ḥanẓalī, from Balkh.
(1) The chain of transmission is weak: Abu Jaʿfar al-Razi was known for poor retention, and al-Hasan practiced tadlis and narrates here with an ʿanʿana. The report is also found in Sunan Ibn Majah (no. 71) through Ahmad b. al-Azhar from Abu al-Nadr with this same isnad. A version from Abu Hurayra that omits the words “and that they establish the prayer and pay the zakat” is recorded by al-Bukhari 3/211 (beginning of Kitab al-Zakat) and 12/244 (Istitabatu al-murtaddin, chapter “Killing those who refuse the obligations”); by Muslim (no. 21) in Kitab al-Iman, chapter “The command to fight people until they say: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”; by al-Tirmidhi (2608); al-Nasaʾi 5/14; and Abu Dawud (2640). Al-Bukhari gives the complete wording with the addition “and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” in 1/70–71, Kitab al-Iman, chapter “If they repent and establish the prayer,” and Muslim also transmits it (no. 22); in one version Muslim says: “until they bear witness that there is no god but Allah and believe in me and in what I have brought.” Ahmad 2/345 relates it through ʿAffan—ʿAbd al-Wahid b. Ziyad—Saʿid b. Kathir b. ʿUbayd—his father—from Abu Hurayra; this chain is sound, for Kathir b. ʿUbayd (Saʿid’s father) was graded reliable by Ibn Hibban and narrated from by several others, and the remaining transmitters are trustworthy. Ibn Khuzayma (2248) also authenticated it via Muhammad b. Aban—Abu Nuʿaym—Saʿid b. Kathir, and it appears in al-Mustadrak 1/387 through Abu Nuʿaym with the same isnad.
