Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I say: Ibn al-Madīnī deemed him weak, while al-Khaṭīb devoted a lengthy treatment to his biography (1).
He died in 204 AH.

213 – Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim al-Laythī al-Khurasānī * (ʿ)
He was the ḥāfiẓ (master memorizer), the imām, the shaykh al-muḥaddithīn (chief of the hadith scholars): Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim al-Laythī, originally from Khurasan, later of Baghdad, from Qaysar (2), belonging to the clan of Layth ibn—

= 7/314–315. Yahya ibn Adam also relates— as cited in Akhbar Abi Hanifa, p. 131—“I have never seen anyone more versed in fiqh than al-Hasan ibn Ziyad.” Whoever knows who Yahya ibn Adam was, the rank he held in learning, and the jurists he met, will grasp the weight of such a testimony in favor of al-Hasan ibn Ziyad. Abu Awana included his hadith in his Mustakhraj on Sahih Muslim, and al-Hakim put it in his Mustadrak; both insertions amount to implicit accreditation. Maslama ibn Qasim declared, “He was trustworthy—may Allah have mercy on him,” and Ibn Hibban listed him in al-Thiqat, as reported by the author of Kashf al-Astar ‘an Rijal Ma‘ani al-Athar. Despite this imam’s eminence in scholarship, the breadth of his hadith transmission, his leadership in jurisprudence, his lofty character, generosity, and firm adherence to the Sunnah, some spiteful partisans did not hesitate to fasten upon him shameful accusations—too indecent even to mention—fabricated in sheer injustice and aggression. Transmitters should fear Allah and spare their books the blemish of recording such calumnies, or at least expose their weakness and artificiality, lest the reader be misled by confidence in those transmitters. It is most likely that al-Dhahabi refrained from mentioning them because he knew their falsity and that they were born of rancor and fanaticism. (1) So he states here, whereas in Tarikh al-Islam, vol. 11, he writes: “In al-Hasan’s biography Abu Bakr al-Khatib has transmitted things I ought not repeat.” Shaykh al-Kawthari, in his book al-Imtaʿ, pp. 36–50, has reproduced what appears of those reports in Tarikh Baghdad, Ibn ʿAdi’s al-Kamil, and al-ʿUqayli’s al-Duʿafaʾ, refuted them, and exposed their falsity. (2) This is the honorific of Abu al-Nadr, as will be explained below.
