Among those who studied under him were Muḥammad ibn Shujāʿ al-Thaljī and Shuʿayb ibn Ayyūb al-Ṣarīfīnī.
He was counted among the exceptionally intelligent, outstanding in juristic reasoning, and he accepted the judgeship after Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, but later dismissed himself from office (1).
Muḥammad ibn Samāʿah said, “I heard him say, ‘I wrote down from Ibn Jurayj twelve thousand hadiths, every one of which a jurist needs’ (2).”
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Hārithī said, “I have never seen anyone with better character than al-Ḥasan al-Luʾluʾī! He used to clothe his servants just as he clothed himself (3).”
The reading of Asim for the Fatiha and the two last surahs is transmitted with the highest degree of tawatur (multiple‐attested transmission). It is therefore regrettable that certain works of Qurʾanic commentary and hagiography repeat those variant readings and try to present them as Qurʾanic readings attributed to Abu Hanifa, transmitted through al-Hasan b. Ziyad. Specialists have demonstrated— as I noted in Taʾnib al-Khatib and elsewhere— that these readings are falsely ascribed to him. Among the spurious readings linked to Abu Hanifa are: the verse wa-idh ibtala Ibrahimu rabbahu, pronounced with “Ibrahim” in the nominative and “his Lord” in the accusative; and the verse innama yakhsha Allahu min ʿibadihi al-ʿulamaʾ, pronounced with the divine name in the nominative and “the scholars” in the accusative. See al-Bahr al-Muhit 1:374–375 and 7:312.

(2) Tarikh Baghdad 7:314. Al-Hasan b. Ziyad has a well-known Musnad containing his narrations from Abu Hanifa. It is one of the seventeen Musnads of Abu Hanifa whose chains of transmission are listed in al-Fihrist al-Awsat by the hadith scholar Shams b. Tulun; in ʿUqud al-Humān by Muhammad b. Yusuf al-Salihi; in the Musnad registry (Thabat) of Shaykh Ayyub b. Ahmad al-Dimashqi al-Khalwati; and in Hasr al-Sharid fi Asanid Muhammad b. ʿAbid al-Sindi. The hadith scholar ʿAli b. ʿAbd al-Muhsin al-Duwalibi al-Hanbali also recorded his chain for the Musnad of al-Hasan b. Ziyad in his Thabat, preserved in the AzZahiriyya Library of Damascus under manuscript no. 285.
(3) The author writes in Tarikh al-Islam: Ibn Kas al-Nakhʿi related: Ahmad b. ʿAbd al-Hamid al-Harithi told us, “I have never seen anyone who produced better pupils than al-Hasan b. Ziyad, whose approach was easier to follow or whose manner was gentler, while he possessed profound fiqh, knowledge, asceticism and piety. He used to clothe his servants with garments equal to his own.” The same report is quoted by al-Simari in Akhbar Abi Hanifa wa-Ashabihi, p. 131, and by al-Khatib in his Tarikh.
