and Ibn Jurayj, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared, ‘Two qualities are never combined in a hypocrite: dignified bearing and sound understanding of the religion.’⦗1⦘”
Abū ʿĪsā said, “Khalaf reports this ḥadīth on his own, and I do not know what its exact standing is.”
Al-Ḥākim stated in his History: “I heard Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz the preacher say, ‘I heard Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Bīkandī say, “I heard our teachers mention Ibn Jurayj, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and several others.”’”
Among those who narrated from him were ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān, Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd, Muḥammad ibn Muṣaffā, and the ḥadīth scholars of Ḥimṣ.
Abū Dāwūd said, “There is nothing objectionable about him.”
I add: he was the elder of the two brothers and died before the year 200 AH—may Allah have mercy on him.
211 – Khalaf ibn Ayyūb Abū Saʿīd al-ʿĀmirī * (T)
The imām, ḥadīth scholar, jurist, Muftī of the eastern lands—Abū Saʿīd al-ʿĀmirī al-Balkhī, the Ḥanafī, the ascetic, and the leading scholar of Balkh.
He studied jurisprudence under the judge Abū Yūsuf.
He also heard ḥadīths from Ibn Abī Laylā, ʿAwf al-Aʿrābī, Maʿmar ibn Rāshid, and a number of others.
He kept the company of Ibrāhīm ibn Adham for a time.
Those who transmitted from him include Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Abū Kurayb, ʿAlī ibn Salamah al-Labaqī, and the scholars of his own city.
Because of concerns about his precision, Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn regarded him as somewhat lenient.
Abū ʿĪsā said in his Jāmiʿ, in the chapter on the superiority of understanding over mere worship: “Abū Kurayb narrated to us; Khalaf ibn Ayyūb narrated to us, from ʿAwf, from Ibn Sīrīn …”
