Habib, from Habib, (1) from Maymun ibn Mihran, from Yazid ibn al-Asamm: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Maymuna while he was in a state of ihram.” (2)
Nevertheless, al-Ansari did transmit Yazid ibn al-Asamm’s report exactly in this form.
Al-Athram said: “I heard Abu ʿAbd Allah say, ‘The only thing that lowered al-Ansari’s status in the eyes of the hadith scholars was his resort to personal opinion; as for his hearing, he certainly had heard ….’ He then cited the aforementioned narration, noting its weakness.
He also said: ‘Al-Ansari’s own books were lost, so afterward he would narrate from the notebooks of his servant Abu Hakim.’” (3)
= Al-Nasa’i. Muhanna reports: “I asked Ahmad about this hadith; he answered, ‘It does not contain the word sa’im (fasting). The correct wording is wa-huwa muhrim (while he was in a state of ihram).’” Al-Nasa’i then cited several chains from Ibn ‘Abbas, none of which include the path of Ayyub found here. The hadith is unquestionably authentic. It is also recorded by Abu Dawud (2373) and Ibn Majah (2682) through two isnads that run: Yazid b. Abi Ziyad → Miqsam → Ibn ‘Abbas.
See our notes to Zad al-Ma‘ad, 2/60, for the texts that show the ruling forbidding cupping for a fasting person was later abrogated.
(1) The manuscript mistakenly reads “bin.”
(2) Tarikh Baghdad, 5/409–410. Abu Khaythamah relates that Mu‘adh and Yahya b. Sa‘id rejected the report of al-Ansari and affirmed instead the sound narration transmitted by Yazid b. al-Asamm—who was Ibn ‘Abbas’s cousin—that the Prophet married Maymuna while not in ihram. Ahmad (6/335) and Abu Dawud (1843) record this through two chains: Hammad b. Salamah → Habib b. al-Shahid → Maymun b. Mihran → Yazid b. al-Asamm → Maymuna, who said: “The Messenger of Allah married me at Sarf while we were both outside ihram.”
The same wording appears in al-Tirmidhi (845), Ibn Majah (1964), Ahmad (6/333), and al-Tahawi (2/270) through Jarir b. Hazim → Abu Fazzarah → Yazid b. al-Asamm → Maymuna: “The Messenger of Allah married her while not in ihram, consummated the marriage while not in ihram, and she died at Sarf, where we buried her in the pavilion where the consummation had taken place.”
By contrast, the firmly established report from Ibn ‘Abbas states that the Prophet married Maymuna while in ihram. It is found in al-Bukhari, 4/45 (Book of Hajj, “Marriage of a Muhrim,” and Book of Marriage, “Marriage of a Muhrim”), Muslim (1410), and—on the same topic—from ‘Aisha in al-Tahawi’s Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar, 1/442 (authenticated by Ibn Hibban, 1271), and from Abu Hurayrah in al-Tahawi.
(3) Additional remarks attributed to Ahmad are collected by Ibn al-Qayyim in Zad al-Ma‘ad, 2/62–63; see the references there.
