Abu Salama ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Abu Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām—both of whom heard ʿĀʾisha say, “He behaved badly in my case.” This was recorded by al-Bukhārī.

Yūnus ibn Bukayr also transmitted from Ibn Isḥāq: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Ḥazm told me, on the authority of ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾisha, who said: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited to the people the story by which my innocence was made known, he came down and ordered that two men and one woman who had spoken the accusation of indecency against me be given the prescribed punishment, so they were flogged. Those who had hurled the slander were Ibn Ubayy, Mistah, Ḥassān, and Ḥamnah bint Jahsh.”

Shuʿbah narrates from Sulaymān, from Abū l-Ḍaḥḥā, from Masrūq, who said: “Ḥassān ibn Thābit entered upon ʿĀʾisha ﵂ and began to recite some verses:
‘Chaste, dignified—never touched by suspicion;
She rises hungry, having abstained from the flesh of the heedless.’
She replied, ‘You are not like that.’ I said to her, ‘You let a man such as this enter your presence when Allah has revealed, “As for the one who assumed the greater share of it, he shall have a mighty punishment” (al-Nūr 11)?’ She answered, ‘And what punishment is harsher than blindness?’ She then added, ‘He used to defend the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ This report is agreed upon.”

Yūnus further relates from Ibn Isḥāq: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī told me that Ḥassān had repeatedly lampooned Ṣafwān ibn al-Muʿaṭṭal over the affair of ʿĀʾisha, insinuating:
‘The wearers of cloaks have grown proud and many,
While the son of al-Farīʿa has become the target of the town.’
One night Ṣafwān met him as he was returning from visiting his maternal uncles of the Banū Sāʿida and struck him
