Allah, who related that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Every prophet has an intimate friend (walī), and my intimate friend is Abraham.”
This report is exceedingly singular.
Al-Tirmidhī recorded it (1) through one of his teachers, from Abū Aḥmad.
It contains a hidden flaw, for Wakīʿ and Abū Nuʿaym also transmitted it from Sufyān, but with Masrūq omitted from the chain.
206 – Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Muthannā al-Anṣārī * (ع)
The Imām, the eminent scholar, ḥadīth master, and trustworthy authority; the judge of Basra: Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Muthannā ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Anas ibn Mālik al-Anṣārī, of the Khazraj, then of the Najjār clan, from Basra.
Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā al-ʿAnazī heard him say, “I was born in the year 118 AH.”
(1) All the transmitters in this chain are reliable. The hadith is reported by al-Tirmidhi (no. 2995), al-Bazzar, and al-Tabari (no. 7216) through the isnad of Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri → Sufyan al-Thawri → his father.
Al-Bazzar notes that others besides Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated it from Sufyan through his father, from Abu al-Duha, from Abd Allah—without the intermediary Masruq. Al-Tirmidhi likewise reproduces this version through Wakīʿ from Sufyan and comments, “This wording is sounder.” Ibn Kathir (1/372) objects, pointing out that Wakīʿ, in his Tafsir, reports: “Sufyan related to us, from his father, from Abu Ishaq, from Abd Allah b. Masʿud who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said …,” and then cites the tradition in full.
I add: Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri is not the sole transmitter who preserves the uninterrupted chain. He is corroborated by Muhammad b. Ubayd al-Tanāqasi, cited by al-Hakim (2/292), who declared the hadith authentic on the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim—a judgment endorsed by al-Dhahabi—as well as by Abu al-Ahwas Salam b. Sulaym in the Musnad of Saʿid b. Mansur (cited by Ibn Kathir, 1/372). Both corroborators are trustworthy.
