His death took place while he was away from home, in the town of Famm al-Ṣilḥ (1), in the year 203 AH, during the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, on its fifteenth day.
The exact date was recorded by Muḥammad ibn Saʿd (2), while the year was noted by al-Bukhārī (3) and Abū Ḥātim (4).
Among those who learned from him the Qurʾānic reading of ʿĀṣim were: Shuʿayb ibn Ayyūb al-Ṣarīfīnī, Abū Ḥamdūn al-Ṭayyib ibn Ismāʿīl, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Shākir, and others (5).
Abū Hishām al-Rifāʿī said, “Yahyā ibn Ādam narrated to us: I asked Abū Bakr about the letters of ʿĀṣim contained in this booklet for forty years, and he related all of them to me, reciting them to me letter by letter (6).”
