ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Masarah al-Makkī, Muḥammad ibn Saʿd al-ʿAwfī, Abū Bakr al-Ṣāghānī, ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāmah, and a great many others.
Among the earlier authorities who narrated from him was Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr.
Mujāhid ibn Mūsā said, “I never wrote from any shaykh whose head was hotter than Abū Nūḥ; all he would boom out was, ‘Shuʿbah narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us.’” (1)
ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī and Ibn Numayr said, “He is reliable.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn remarked, “There is nothing wrong with him.” (2)
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “He was a man of sound judgment.” (3)
Ibn Ḥibbān observed, “He made mistakes, and the heart is uneasy about him because he narrated—through al-Layth, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—the report concerning slaves and their being beaten.” (4)
I (the author) say: He has a hadith that cannot be accepted about the story of the Prophet ﷺ and Baḥīrā in Syria. (5)
He died in 207 AH.
Al-Bukhārī treated him as an authority.
