Abū ʿAbd Allāh said, “In earlier days I had copied a small selection of ḥadīths from Shabābah, before we came to realize that he held this view—namely, Murjiʾism (1).
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad added, “My father disapproved of the report transmitted by Shabābah from Shuʿbah, from Maʿn, who said: ‘Nabīdh (a date infusion) used to be prepared for ʿAbd Allāh in a large jar.’
Al-ʿUqaylī relates that Shabābah travelled from al-Madāʾin because of the issue for which Aḥmad had censured him, and messengers were constantly passing between the two men. The narrator says, “I saw Shabābah in those days full of grief and anxiety; then he went back to al-Madāʾin before matters were set right with Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (2).”
198 – ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith ibn Saʿīd ibn Dhakwān al-Tamīmī * (ʿ)
An imām, ḥāfiẓ, and reliable authority; Abū Sahl al-Tamīmī, al-ʿAnbarī—their client—from Basra, known as al-Tannūrī.
He narrated from: his father, along with the latter’s compilations; and from: Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī, ʿIkrimah ibn
This report from Ibn Yaʿmar is exceedingly rare and is not known except through this chain: it is transmitted only by Shababa, from Shuʿba, from Bukayr b. ʿAtaʾ, from him. In Shuʿba’s narrations, the same chain from ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Yaʿmar goes back to the Prophet, who said: “al-hajj ʿArafa” (the core of the pilgrimage is the standing at ʿArafa)—this wording is what is ordinarily associated with the chain. By contrast, the hadith prohibiting the use of ad-dubbaʾ and al-muzaffat (fermenting in gourds and pitch-coated jars) is, with this isnad, extremely unusual. Many leading authorities objected to Shababa on that account, including Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim, and Ibn ʿAdi. Ibn al-Madini, when asked about it, replied: “It is not impossible for someone who heard many reports from Shuʿba to be alone in transmitting an odd narration.”
