A number of scholars said, “Shabābah died in the year 206 AH.”
By authorized transmission a group related to us, saying:
“ʿUmar ibn Ṭabarzad informed us; Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn informed us; Ibn Ghaylān informed us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rūḥ al-Madāʾinī narrated to us; Shabābah narrated to us; Ibn Zabr narrated to us; al-Zuhrī—from Abū Salamah—from ʿĀʾishah—who said:
‘I entered the state of iḥrām for ʿumrah alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his pilgrimage.’
Al-Zuhrī added: ‘I heard someone other than her say, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered iḥrām for both ʿumrah and ḥajj.”’ (1)
Al-Athram said: I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh—while speaking about Shabābah—remark:
‘He reports from Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ administered lashes for wine. This counts for nothing; the same report is narrated by more than one person from Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from Anas.’ (2)
It was said to Abū ʿAbd Allāh: ‘He also transmits from Shuʿbah, from Bukayr ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yaʿmar al-Dīlī regarding drinks prepared in gourds (dubbaʾ).’
He replied, ‘With this chain Shuʿbah has only related the ḥadith concerning the pilgrimage.’
(1) See al-Bukhari 3/431–432, Book of Hajj, chapter: “Whoever drove the sacrificial camels with him”; and Muslim, nos. 1227 and 1228. Ibn al-Qayyim writes in Zad al-Maad 2/107: “We maintain that the Prophet ﷺ entered ihram as a qarin (combining Hajj and ʿumrah) on the strength of more than twenty explicit reports,” after which he lists them. For the full documentation, consult the same work, 2/107 and 117.
(2) The hadith prescribing lashes for drinking wine is related through Shuʿbah, from Qatadah, from Anas: al-Bukhari 12/54, Book of Hudud, chapter: “What has been reported concerning beating those who drink wine”; Muslim 1706, Book of Hudud, chapter: “The prescribed penalty for wine”; and al-Tirmidhi 1443. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar comments in Fath al-Bari 12/54, about the isnad that places al-Hasan between Qatadah and Anas—citing it from al-Nasaʾi—that this is an example of an added link within an otherwise uninterrupted chain.
(3) The autograph reads "hadith al-hadith"; the corrected wording is as given above. Ibn Rajab notes in Sharh al-ʿIlal 1/442–443: “The report of Shabbabah, from Bukayr b. ʿAtaʾ, from ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Maʿmar, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he forbade dubba and muzaffat. The Prophet’s prohibition against preparing nabidh in gourds (dubba) and in pitch-coated jars (muzaffat) is sound and firmly established, transmitted by a large number of his Companions. As for the narration of ʿAbd al-Rahman …”
